On the 17th of May Covid-19 rules have been relaxed and the restrictions on non-essential travel finally have been lifted depending on the country you have been in the last 10 days before departure.

To make it easier the UK government has implemented a traffic light system and gives countries a red, amber or green color to categorize countries based on latest coronavirus developments and the associated risks to travel to the UK will bring.

Based on which color your country has been given certain rules apply, even when you have been fully vaccinated!

Red countries

If you have been in a red country 10 days before you travel to the UK entry is not allowed unless you are a British or Irish resident or live in the UK.

Amber countries

Have you been in or through in an amber country in the last 10 days before you travel to the UK the you must:

Before travel to England

Before you travel to England you must:

  • take a COVID-19 test
  • book and pay for day 2 and day 8 COVID-19 travel tests – to be taken after arrival in England
  • complete a passenger locator form

On arrival in England

On arrival in England you must:

  • quarantine in the place you are staying for 10 days
  • take a COVID-19 test on or before day 2 and on or after day 8

Green countries

If you have been only in a green country 10 days before departure to England

Before travel to England

Before you travel to England you must:

  • take a COVID-19 test
  • book and pay for a day 2 COVID-19 test – to be taken after arrival in England
  • complete a passenger locator form

On arrival in England

You must take a COVID-19 test on or before day 2 after you arrive.

You do not need to quarantine unless the test result is positive.

You must quarantine if NHS Test & Trace informs you that you travelled to England with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.

Conclusion

What it comes down to is that if you haven’t been in a country which is on the green list 10 days prior to departure to the UK travel is not an option because of the 10 day quarantine obligation. So let’s hope you’re country is on the green list or will be added soon!
